What Are Boat Stickers?

Boat stickers are vinyl-cut lettering and numbers made for boats. Once applied, only the letters or numbers show — there is no background sheet left on the hull and you can feel the letters and numbers if you move your fingers across the vinyl lettering. That includes boat names and boat rego stickers made for Australian vessels.

Most orders fall into one of these types:

  • Boat name stickers — custom names sized by length for the hull or cabin.
  • Boat registration stickers — letters and numbers at legal height for Australian rego rules.
  • Round rego stickers — including 450mm round regos for trailered boats that need a circular plate style.
  • Boat graphics — extra decals and identifiers when you want more than names and rego.

Why Marine-Grade Boat Stickers Matter

Boats take sun, salt, wash-downs and temperature changes. Ordinary stickers fade, lift or crack. Marine-grade vinyl is built for that environment.

  • UV resistant — holds colour longer in Australian sun.
  • Salt and water resistant — stays put around the waterline and on trailered boats.
  • Made for boat surfaces — suits alloy, fibreglass and painted hulls (3M option for tougher jobs like Polycraft).
  • 2 material choices — standard marine vinyl made in Belgium, or upgrade to our signature USA made 3M cast option which has been used in Australia since the 90’s.

Boat Sticker Sizing and Placement

Getting the size right avoids re-orders and keeps rego stickers legal.

Boat registration stickers

Sold by fixed sizes that meet registration height rules Australia-wide (150mm letter height). Size options include:

  • 550mm × 150mm
  • 550mm × 185mm
  • 600mm × 150mm
  • 600mm × 185mm

Boat name stickers

We sell boat names by length, not height. Most boats have enough height (often 300mm+), so length is what matters for fit and value. That way you know how wide the name will be before you order.

If you are in the process of changing your name for your boat you may want to consider doing a boat renaming ceremony.

Australian Boat Registration Numbers — What the Rules Require

Boat stickers — Australian boat registration numbers

Registration numbers must be easy to read, contrast with the hull, sit above the waterline, and use solid sans-serif characters (uppercase letters and numerals). Rules are set by each state and territory; most are similar, with Western Australia having extra requirements on some hulls.

What customers usually need:

  • Contrast — dark lettering on a light hull, or light on dark.
  • Solid, clear characters — no script fonts for rego itself.
  • One straight line — registration numbers in a single line.
  • Correct height — typically 150mm letter height Australia-wide.

We make marine vinyl letter and number stickers in the sizes and colours you choose. See our state-by-state compliance guides for placement details.

Why Boat Rego Sticker Compliance Matters

Compliance matters because every Australian state has strict rules for boat registration sticker visibility which includes sizing and placement. If your rego numbers are too small, the wrong colour, or poorly contrasted, you can be fined and your boat may be considered non‑compliant on the water. Using correctly sized, high‑contrast stickers ensures your boat is legally identifiable and safe in all conditions that meet all regulation laws.

Boat Rego Stickers and Australian Compliance

Registration stickers must meet your state’s marking rules. We size boat rego letters and numbers to suit Australian requirements, then you place them where your state expects.

Why our Boat Stickers Last Longer?

The longevity of your boat stickers starts with the font you choose. Our font list has been tweaked, updated, and improved since 2008 to ensure every style cuts cleanly and lasts in harsh marine conditions. Boat lettering needs a minimum stroke thickness to maximise vinyl durability — which is why thin script fonts from Google’s Font Library often fail, with strokes as wide as 3 mm that simply don’t survive sun, salt, and constant water exposure.

Next comes material and colour choice. We offer a premium 3M vinyl option, and colours like black consistently outperform lighter colours such as red in long‑term outdoor durability.

Our online designer lets you preview each custom font with your text, colours, shadow, and outline options before ordering your premium vinyl‑cut decals. Block‑style fonts from Font 9 upward are ideal for even‑height registration numbers, while Fonts 1 and 2 remain popular choices for classic boat rego stickers. For WA compliance at 550 mm width and above, Fonts 3, 9, and 15 are the recommended options.
