Boat registration stickers are the vinyl letters and numbers on the hull so your number can be read on the water. Australians call them boat rego stickers — same job, vinyl-cut, with no printed background.

That matters on boat registration stickers because a wrong height, a fancy script font, or a colour that disappears on a dark hull is not a styling problem. It is a display problem with your registering state.

Every colour is marine vinyl rated for UV, saltwater and contrast on the hull. Use the swatch to pick a shade that stays readable — including black, white, metallics and the main marine reds and blues.

Choosing the right font is as important as size and colour when you order boat registration stickers. A legal, easy-to-read rego starts with a clear block font so every letter and number is the same height and readable at a distance.

Script, decorative, or uneven fonts can fail state display rules even if the vinyl is the correct size. Most Australian states need high-contrast, unobstructed characters on both sides of the hull, so a simple sans-serif or block style is the safest choice. For Western Australia, pick a font that still meets the minimum height and overall width (about 550 mm and up), such as our Font 3, Font 9, or Font 15. Choose a colour that contrasts with the hull, then order a matching pair so port and starboard stay legal and easy to apply.

ACT & NT

• ACT: no local recreational registration scheme. Display the numbers to the rules of the state that issued them (often NSW).
• NT: recreational boats generally do not need registration or hull numbers. If you later operate in a registering state, that state’s display rules apply.

What are boat registration stickers?

Your marine authority issues a number when the vessel is put on the books. Boat registration stickers are not that certificate, and they are not the annual label some states still stick on the hull. They are the long-life characters you apply so the number is visible while the boat is in the water.

Good boat rego stickers do three things at once:

• Match the characters your authority allocated, in uppercase letters and numerals.
• Meet the height, contrast and placement rules for that state and that class of craft.
• Survive UV, salt and alkaline wash-down without the edges lifting in the first season.

We cut from one sheet of vinyl. After you burnish and peel the application tape, only the letters and numbers remain. There is no background panel. That is why a well-chosen colour looks like paint, and why a poor colour choice fails contrast checks just as badly as painted numbers would.

Vinyl-cut Boat Rego Stickers versus Printed Registration Decals

Printed rego decals sit on a vinyl rectangle, so they look like a sticker on the hull. Vinyl-cut boat registration stickers are only the letters and numbers, so they read as lettering and water sheds around each character.

Outline and shadow are fine if the finished number still looks solid from a distance. Script fonts, thin strokes and heavy decoration often fail on the water even when they look good on a phone.

Round boat registration stickers (about 300–450 mm) are popular on older half cabins. Many states want one straight, readable line, so do not assume a round set is legal.

Sizes we cut

Most powered recreational boats need 150 mm character height. Layout length is usually 550 mm or 600 mm. Long numbers, thick fonts, and outline or shadow need the 600 mm length.

The second number is character height. The first is layout length. Long numbers, thick fonts and outline or shadow eat length — order 600 mm rather than cramming the bow.

Personal watercraft often sit on a smaller minimum (commonly 100 mm in NSW and Victoria; Tasmania publishes 75 mm for PWC). We cut jet ski registration stickers as a separate product. Tenders, yachts and non-planing craft can sit on smaller minima in some states. Order to the vessel class and the registering state, not the ramp you used on Saturday.

Standard Vinyl or 3M Vinyl Option

3M cast vinyl is made in the USA and has a long record in marine and outdoor signage. High-tack adhesive. Best when the boat lives in the weather, sits on a mooring, or is a Polycraft-style hull.

Standard vinyl is a Belgium-made outdoor film. Medium-tack adhesive. We rate it about 5 years for colours and 3 years for metallics on typical trailer boats. Suppliers often rate it higher. Covered, washed trailer boats usually last longer than the published figure.

Both are marine-grade. Neither film makes the display legal. Legality is height, colour, font, sides and position.

Colour, contrast and hull type

Every state that publishes display rules talks about contrast. Dark on dark fails. White on white fails. Two-tone paint that puts the number across a colour break can fail even when each colour by itself would have been fine.

Western Australia is stricter on many motor boats: black block characters, not slanted, and a white surround on non-white hulls. Do not guess from a NSW photo.

We cut for painted timber, fibreglass, aluminium, Polycraft (use 3M), steel, lapstrake and clinker. Place boat rego stickers well above the loaded waterline — a number that sits clear on the trailer but goes under with people, ice and fuel aboard will fail.

How to Apply Boat Rego Stickers

• Wash the area. Remove wax, polish and salt with wax and grease remover.
• Dry completely.
• Tape the layout from the middle, tape the right side, and step back.
• Check waterline height, rub-rail clearance, and that both sides match.
• Peel the backing from the left, hold the sticker, and cut away the backing.
• Squeegee from the middle toward the right.
• Repeat for the other side.
• Peel the application tape back over itself, down toward the hull.

Boat Names and Graphics

Hull numbers identify the vessel. A boat name is branding. Do not replace one with the other, and do not let a name graphic crowd the registration off the bow. Order names as a separate job and keep boat registration stickers in their legal zone.
