South Australia Boat Registration Requirements cover which powered recreational vessels must be registered, how registration numbers must be displayed, and related rules such as HIN/Boat Code and transfer timeframes.
In South Australia, any recreational vessel fitted with an engine must be registered before it is used on state waters—even if the motor is not running at the time.
That includes:
- Motorboats
- Jet skis
- Other personal watercraft
- Yachts or craft with an auxiliary engine
Displaying Boat Registration Numbers for Boats and Yachts
Registration numbers must be:
- Placed on both sides of the vessel, toward the bow
- On a vertical surface
- In a contrasting colour: If boat is white the rego stickers must be a darker colour like black
- Must be readable from about 50 m in clear conditions while boating
- Boat Registration Stickers must be 150 mm high if the vessel is 3 m or longer
- Boat Registration Stickers must be 100 mm high if the vessel is under 3 m
From 1 September 2023, under the Harbors and Navigation Regulations update, boat registration labels no longer need to be displayed. You still get a renewal notice and certificate; you do not need a yearly sticker on the yacht.
Jetski Registration Requirements
Registration Numbers must be:
- Placed on both sides of the Jetski
- Registration Numbers must be 100mm in height.
- In contrasting colour: If are of Jetski is black rego numbers need to be in white.
- Above waterline + readable from ~50 m
